  • Description

The United States National Karate Championships were held in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday, The sport is drawing wider participation every year in America where most people take it up for personal defence or for exercise.

As a tournament sport it requires special restraint on behalf of the contestants and exceptional skill in judging since the single objective of karate is to disable an attacker. Points are awarded for a clean blow above the waist, and also for blocking body shots. Remarkably it's a sport that attracts women as much as men.

Two local men found themselves fighting each other in the premier event: the blackbelt heavyweight competition. They were Joe Corley and Ken Mcquire. Corley was an easy winner and went on to meet Albert Cheeks in the final. Cheeks, a lighter and more aggressive fighter, built up an early lead and Corley was unable to pull back from his poor start.
