  • Description

A THREE-MAN JAPANESE TEAM ARE SEARCHING IN GUAM FOR TWO JAPANESE SOLDIERS FROM WORLD WAR TWO BELIEVED TO BE IN THE ISLANDS'S JUNGLES. THE MEN, ONE OF WHOM RECENTLY FIRED A SHOT AT A PERSON WHO SPOTTED HIM, ARE THOUGHT TO HAVE STAYED IN HIDING FOR NINETEEN YEARS -- CERTAIN THAT THEY WOULD BE KILLED IF THEY WERE CAUGHT.

FILM TAKEN ON THE ISLAND ON MONDAY SHOWS THE SEARCH GOING ON UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF MR. BUNZO MINAGAWA, A FORMER SERGEANT IN THE JAPANESE ARMY WHO WAS HIMSELF DISCOVERED WITH A FELLOW SOLDIER IN GUAM JUNGLES IN 1960 -- FIFTEEN YEARS AFTER THE WAR ENDED.

DURING THE SEARCH, EXPECTED TO LAST TWO OR THREE MONTHS, MR. MINAGAWA IS USING A LOUDSPEAKER TO TELL THE SOLDIERS THAT HE TOO WAS HIDDEN IN THE JUNGLE AND THAT HE WAS NOW ABLE TO ENJOY LIFE IN JAPAN. LOCAL POLICE AND SOLDIERS ARE ASSISTING THE SEARCHERS.

AND AN AMERICAN HELICOPTER IS TO DROP 6,000 LEAFLETS OVER THE ISLAND TELLING THE MEN HOW JAPAN HAS CHANGED AND THAT THE AMERICANS WILL NOT KILL "WAR PRISONERS". THE LEAFLETS ALSO CALL ON THE SUSPECTED STRAGGLERS TO GIVE THEIR NAMES SO THAT THEIR FAMILIES MAY BE BROUGHT TO GUAM FOR A REUNION WITH THEM.
