  • Description

Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith forecast a tough time ahead for his country when he addressed a meeting in Bulawayo, Rhodesia, on Tuesday (22 July).

He said the tough time would be caused by a stepped-up drive against black guerrilla forces.

Mr. Smith said the new campaign was necessary because opponents of the "detente exercise" had failed to comply with their part of the bargain.

His statement follows the stalemate in the white minority government's talks with African nationalist leaders. Mr. Smith and other government ministers claim the nationalists deliberately delayed the talks while a new and larger guerrilla army was being formed.

"We know all too clearly from history, recent as well as past, that in this game if only one side plays according to the rules, then that side finds itself heading for complete disaster", he said.

Mr. Smith made his remarks at the Rhodesian Farmers Union Congress, and he called for greater support for "front-line" farmers in the North-East.
