  • Description

"Mfiti" - meaning ghost, or something unknown - is the name given by Nyasaland Africans to a female, ape-like creature which has been seen near Nkata Bay, Nyasaland, in recent months.

She is the only creature of her kind yet observed in the area and in the past has been known to "demonstrate against" a blue Fordson tractor.

She seems now to have accepted the machine however, and either ignores it altogether, or if it is left unmanned, will sometimes rush down from her treetops nest to have a look. She may be the last of a species on the verge of becoming extinct.

Up to now nobody has been able to decide to which species the 6-foot tall "Mfiti" belongs. In March this year two scientists seeing "Mfiti" for a short time, and at a distance - during a 2-week stay. All they could report was that she was probably a sub-species of chimpanzee, but which sub-species they were unable to sayl.
It's thought "Mfiti" comes either from the south or from the Kandoli hills north of Nkata Bay - a densely forested and still virtually unexplored region at a height of about 3,500 feet above sea level.
