    Whales are getting scarer, though they are still hunted down relentlessly, by leading whaling countries such as Japan and the Soviet Union.

    During the 1960's, the yield of whale-oil from the Antarctic dropped eighty per cent over the previous decade, and this has led the United States to ban commercial whaling, and forbid the importation of whale products, the second measure coming into effect next December.

    In this state of crisis, conservationists are trying to protect whales, and scientists are studying them. This National Broadcasting Company of America report on the whaling situation contains a recording of the scientists' latest discovery, the plaintive song of the humpback whale.

    SYNOPSIS: There are eight great species of whale, and five of them are no longer hunted because they are so near to extinction, But the other three, the Fin, Sei and the Sperm whale, are tracked down relentlessly. Trailers use sonar and spotter planes to find them, and harpoons with explosive heads to kill them.

    The results have been devastating. During the 1960's, the yield of whale-oil in the Antarctic dropped eighty per cent. The leading whale killers are Russia and Japan. Between them they take 85 per cent of the world catch.

    The United States now consumes a fifth or more of the world's whale products, using them in such things as motor-oils, lip-sticks, floor wax and pet food, but the United States has outlawed commercial whaling, and more important, it has forbidden the importation of whale products, not planned to take effect until next December.

    While conservationists have been trying to save whales, scientists have been studying them. They have found that at least one species, the hump-back produces a song, which may carry for miles under water. Here recorded is part of the song the hump-back whale....
