  • Description

Three-thousand fishermen stampeding into a river signal the spectacular climax to the Argungu Fishing Festival, one of Nigeria's best-known sporting and cultural events.

It came round again last weekend (February 15). And the fish in the river at the northern end of Argungu town never knew what hit them.

The three-thousand fishermen, each equipped with two handnets and a gourd float, line the riverbank for nearly a mile. At a given signal, they charge into the water to the accompaniment of songs from musicians in canoes.

It's enough to scare the wits out of the fish, and some monster specimens manage to get themselves caught. This year, the winning fish weighed in at 141 pounds. It won local fishermen Mallam Haruna a trophy donated by the wife of Nigerian head of state, Mrs. Victoria Gowon, plus a motor-scooter, two transistor radios, a bicycle and a GBP300 sterling cash prize.
