Background: Major-General Yakubu Gowon, Head of Nigeria's military Government began a four-day official visit to Mauritania on Saturday (20 February 1971). He was welcomed at Nouakchott Airport by President Moktar Ould Daddah. Mauritania supported the Federal Government during the Nigerian civil war and General Gowon was greeted by the Mauritanians as the architect of Nigerian unity.
