PALMER: "The Egyptian president greeted the American delegation cordially, but reserved his warmest embrace for President Carter's son, Chip, who accompanied Brzezinski on his visit to the Middle East. The meeting lasted an hour and twenty minutes. Later, Brzezinski spoke to reporters, dwelling mostly on the treaty itself, rather than on how Saudi Arabia and Jordan had reacted to it."

BRZEZINSKI: "We are even more convinced than ever before that the forthcoming peace treaty between Egypt and Israel is both the beginning and the cornerstone of a comprehensive peace treaty in the region, a peace treaty that can open the doors to greater prosperity, more progress, more stability in the entire region. We feel that we are on the eve of an important new era in this part of the world, and will continue our efforts to make sure that the progress already achieved continues, and widens, in its scope."
