  • Description

In the village of An-Thanh of Friday (20 October), South Vietnamese troops took up positions around the central market and other strategic points only hours after clearing a force of communist troopers from the area.

An-Thanh is located only about 8 miles northeast of Saigon -- on indication of just how close the communist sappers and guerrillas have been to the capital over the last week.

Villagers who left the hamlet were carefully questioned by the South Vietnamese troops. They reported that the communists had caused no trouble -- merely occupied the village and then left, with two casualties, when the South Vietnamese arrived.

Observers saw the occupation as another indication of what could become a major attack on Saigon itself while others repeated that it was an attempt to politically disrupt the outlying areas just before the United States Presidential elections.
