  • Description

Senator Edward Kennedy's call for the withdrawal of British troops from Ulster and the unification of Ireland raised little enthusiasm in the United States on Wednesday (20 October) and an early Senate approval of his remarks seemed unlikely, according to political observers.

Senator Kennedy said in a speech to an almost deserted Senate that Britain had lost its way and that violence would continue in Northern Ireland unless it made a firm commitment to troop withdrawal and Irish unification.

Senator Kennedy and his supporter Senator Abraham Ribicoff answered questions from reporters soon after their statement on Wednesday.
