    Background: On the second day (Thursday, 26 April) of his four-day visit to Lagos State, Nigeria, General Yakobu Gowon, Nigerian head of state, officially opened the Itokin Bridge. He also attended a civic reception in Epe later on that day.

    Lagos State is the commercial and industrial centre of Nigeria, and as the nation's chief port, it handles the greatest percentage of the country's export and import.

    The Itokin Bridge is the latest government project to improve road development in the country. The bridge is 475 feet (125 meters) long, and it spans the River Aye. The bridge is expected to take heavy commercial traffic from the North to Lagos.

    SYNOPSIS: On the second day of his visit to Lagos State, Nigerian head of state, General Gowon, officially opened the Itokin Bridge.

    The bridge is four hundred and seventy feet long, and is the latest government project to improve road transport in the country.

    Shortly after the ribbon ceremony, General Gowon and his turning party went to the Epe District Recreational Ground. There they were received by local dignitaries. Epe is the western-most district of Loges State.

    A large crowd turned out to greet General Gowon.

    The afternoon's activities included a float display, staged by local citizens.

    General Gowon was accompanied by Brigadier Johnson, Military Governor of the State.

    The activities at the recreational ground lasted for more than an hour.

    The reception ended with traditional Nigerian dances.

    Lagos State is the commercial and industrial centre of Nigeria.
