  • Description

Heather Mckay of Australia, British Women's Open squash champion for the last 15 years, reached the final once again last night (March 2nd) at Wembley. But for the first time in 11 years in this event, her opponent took a game from her.

SYNOPSIS: Mrs. McKay was playing a British girl, Susan Cogswell, who is ten years her junior, and extremely fit and agile. (Mrs. Mckay is the player with the three bands round the bottom of her dress).

Miss Cogswell was able to put on enough pressure to make Mrs. McKay play nervously at times. Both players made errors, but Mrs. Mckay took the first two games, 9 - 5, 9 - 7 .

Then came the surprise. Miss Cogswell took the third game 9 -5. It is five years since any woman player has taken a championship game off Mrs. McKay.

Mid-way through the fourth game -- and Mrs. McKay was on her way to victory. She took this game 9-0, to give her the match, in 40 minutes. In search of her 16th championship, Mrs. Mckay meets another Australian, Barbara Wall, in the final.
