  • Description

HUNDREDS OF INDIANS, MANY OF THEM WOMEN CARRYING BABIES, STAGED A DEMONSTRATION OUTSIDE THE HOME OF MRS. INDIRA GHANDI, THE PRIME MINISTER, YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) PROTESTING AGAINST RISING PRICES FOLLOWING THE DEVALUATION OF THE RUPEE LAST WEEK.

HEADED BY A CONTINGENT OF DEMONSTRATORS RIDING MOTOR-SCOOTERS, THE PROTEST MARCHERS MADE THEIR WAY IN SWELTERING HEAT TO MRS. GHANDI'S HOME, ONLY TO DISCOVER THAT SHE HAD NOT RETURNED FROM A TWO-DAY TOUR OF THE DROUGHT-STRICKEN AREAS OF CENTRAL INDIA.

A SURVEY OF PRICES IN NEW DELHI INDICATED THAT FOOD STUFFS AND OTHER ESSENTIALS REMAINED RELATIVELY STEADY AFTER THE DEVALUATION. BUT IMPORTED GOODS - SUCH AS RAZOR BLADES, WHISKY AND BOOKS - VANISHED FROM THE SHOPS OR ROSE SUBSTANTIALLY IN PRICE.
