    ALGERIA CELEBRATED THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF ITS INDEPENDENCE TODAY (FRIDAY) IN CARNIVAL ATMOSPHERE. A 101-GUN SALUTE OPENED THE CELEBRATIONS IN THE BEFLAGGED STREETS OF ALGIERS, WHERE A PROCESSION SLOWLY FILED PAST THE OFFICIAL STANDS AT THE FOOT OF THE CASBAH. MR. BEN BELLA, THE PRIME MINISTER, AND COLONEL BOUMEDIENNE, HIS FIRST DEPUTY, PRESIDED IN THE PRESENCE OF THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS AND A NUMBER OF FOREIGN GUESTS.

    MANY ASPECTS OF ALGERIAN LIFE WERE REPRESENTED IN THE PARADE IN WHICH AN ESTIMATED 100,000 PEOPLE TOOK PART. PARTICULAR EMPHASIS WAS GIVEN TO HOSPITAL WORK, THE RED CROSS, AND TO YOUTH MOVEMENTS. SOME 300,000 WATCHED THE PROCESSION, WHICH TOOK FIVE HOURS TO PASS THROUGH THE CITY'S STREETS.

    THE ANNIVERSARY WAS DEDICATED TO THE RULING F.L.N. PARTY WHICH LED THE COUNTRY TO INDEPENDENCE. AS PART OF THE CELEBRATION 47 STREETS AND SQUARE IN ALGIERS HAVE BEEN RENAMED TO COMMEMORATE HEROES OF THE SEVEN-YEARS OF FIGHTING WHICH BROUGHT INDEPENDENCE.
