Tennis... and United States Open champion Jimmy Connors beat his old rival Bjorn Borg of Sweden 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 to take first place in the Obras Sanitarias 78 four-man round robin tournament in Buenos Aires on Tuesday (26 September). Triple Wimbledon champion Borg had the edge in the opening set, but Connors, full of confidence after his recent US Open success over Borg, hit back strongly to take the next two sets. In their opening matches on Saturday (23 September) Connors easily accounted for the up and coming Argentine star Jose Luis Clerc, and Borg had no difficulty beating Rumania's controversial Ilie Nastase.
SYNOPSIS: Against Clerc, Connors serving at the far end, was always in control, but this time a deep, penetrating two-handed backhand is just too long.
Connors serving again... Clerc keeps him on the baseline, with angled drives, and again takes the point.
Clerc was playing well, but Connors had the extra power, and at 5-4 in the second, he served for the match... Clerc returns too long, and it's all over. 6-3, 6-4 to Connors.
Then it was Borg and Nastase... Nastase serving, but it's Borg's point. As always Nastase had the flair, but Borg had the concentration and consistency.

In the second set it was all Borg, and at 5-1 he served for the match. It was a disappointing performance by Nastase, and another deep drive goes out to give Borg the match 6-3, 6-1.
