  • Description

President Alejandro Lanusse, the President whose first act in governing a nation of meat-eaters was to introduce meat rationing, attended a cattle show in Buenos Aires a few days ago.

Argentinians have completed the first scheduled period of meat rationing under the new Government, intended to ease the pressure of home demand, push more production into exports, and ease the strain on the balance of payments.

Twenty per cent of meat production must be put into exports, says Dr. Aldo Ferrer, Minister of Economy and Labour, if any reduction is to be made in a projected deficit this year of two million head of beef cattle.

So Argentinians are eating less meat--tightening their belts in the most literal manner.
