  • Description

CONSTRUCTION OF WHAT IS CLAIMED WILL BE THE WORLD'S LARGEST HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER STATION IS NEARING COMPLETION IN THE DIVNI MOUNTAINS IN THE SOVIET UNION. ENGINEERS ARE HOPING TO HAVE THE POWER STATION OPERATIVE IN TIME FOR CELEBRATIONS OF THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE OCTOBER REVOLUTION.

CALLED THE KRASNOYARSK STATION, THE NEW HYDRO-ELECTRIC COMPLEX WILL DRAW MOST OF ITS POWER FROM THE YENISEI RIVER.

WORK IS BEING CARRIED ON SIMULTANEOUSLY IN TWO CRATERS. OUR FILM SHOWS THE WORKING WHEEL OF THE HYDRO-TURBINE BEING LOWERED INTO ONE CRATER, AND THE ROTOR BEING LOWERED INTO ANOTHER.

HUGE CRANES WERE NEEDED FOR THE OPERATION, AND THEY HAD TO BE SYNCHRONISED PERFECTLY. THE ENGINEER IN CHARGE OF CONSTRUCTION, BRIGADIER IVAN BELAVIN, TOOK PERSONAL CONTROL OF THE LOWERING OPERATION. THE WORKING WHEEL PARTICULARLY -- TEN TONS IN WEIGHT AND 50 FEET (16 METRES) IN DIAMETER -- HAD TO BE HANDLED WITH THE GREATEST DELICACY.

THE POWER CAPACITY OF THE KRASNOYARSK STATION AT PEAK OUTPUT WILL BE 6,000,000 KILOWATTS.
