Background: United Nations Secretary General Kurt Waldheim began a tour of three African countries on Thursday (14 February) when he arrived in Nouakchott, Mauritania.
The Secretary General's African tour will also include stops in Senegal and Mali.
The Mauritanian President, Moktar Ould Daddah, greeted Dr. Waldheim when he arrived in Nouakchott. The two men later drove through the city in a motorcade.
During a banquet in honour of Dr. Waldheim, President Ould Daddah criticised the U.N. for "getting bogged down in endless debates." He said the U.N. was "less and less fitted to find indispensable solutions." It deal too much, according to the Mauritanian President, with "questions of secondary importance".
