  • Description

West Berlin police and about 10,000 demonstrators protesting against United States intervention in Cambodia fought pitched battles on Saturday (9 May).

Police hurled tear gas and used water cannons and batons to disperse a crowd throwing stones and petrol bombs outside the heavily protected United States Cultural Centre. Two of the protesters were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds after police opened fire. The police said they used guns after being attacked while trying to make an arrest. Some 200 policemen were injured but no figures were available for the demonstrators.. Forty-four arrests were made. One police horse had both legs its front legs broken and was shot on the spot.

Despite the protection for a treble ring of barbed wire, most of the giant glass panes in front of the Cultural Centre were shattered. Red paint spattered the remaining windows.

Earlier, demonstrators had marched through the city waving red flags and shouting "Nixon -- fascists -- how many babies did you kill today?" and "Americans out of Indo-China."
