    THE PARTY OF CAMPAIGNERS FOR UNILATERAL DISARMAMENT, ON A PEACE MARCH FROM SAN FRANCISCO TO MOSCOW, RETURNED TO THE WEST GERMAN FRONTIER CONTROL POINT OF HELMSTEDT, AUGUST 15, AFTER EAST GERMAN POLICE TURNED THEM BACK FROM BERLIN. THE 35 MARCHERS (12 OF THEM WOMEN) CROSSED FROM WEST GERMANY INTO EAST GERMANY, AUGUST 7, AND WERE WELCOMED BY ARMY AND COMMUNIST PARTY OFFICIALS.

    THE EAST GERMAN GOVERNMENT ORIGINALLY AGREED TO ALLOW THE MARCHERS TO VISIT EAST GERMAN TOWNS AND TO ENTER WESTER BERLIN FROM THE NORTH, BUT ON AUGUST 11 THE WERE TOLD THEY COULD NOT ENTER WEST BERLIN. INSTEAD, THEY WERE OFFERED OVERNIGHT ACCOMMODATION IN EAST BERLIN, BUT POLICE WITHDREW THIS OFFER AT THE LAST MINUTE AND THEY WERE RETURNED TO HELMSTEDT BY BUS.

    THE CAMPAIGNERS, WHO HOPED TO REACH MOSCOW BY MID-OCTOBER, ARE NOW PLANNING AN ALTERNATIVE ROUTE TO THE SOVIET CAPITAL.
