Background: THE INTERNATIONAL COURT OR JUSTICE AT THE HAGUE OPENED A HEARING TODAY (MONDAY) OF A CASE IN WHICH ETHIOPIA AND LIBERIA ACCUSE SOUTH AFRICA OF VIOLATING THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS MANDATE UNDER WHICH SOUTHWEST AFRICA IS ADMINISTERED.

THE TWO COUNTRIES COMPLAIN IN PARTICULAR THAT SOUTH AFRICA IS APPLYING APARTHEID TO THE TERRITORY. THE HEARING CONTINUES TOMORROW.

A PROMINENT MEMBER OF THE DUTCH REFORMED CHURCH IN SOUTH AFRICA WAS ONE OF TODAY'S WITNESSES. HE WAS THE REVEREND J.S. GERICKE, CHAIRMAN OF THE COUNCIL OF STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY. GIVING EVIDENCE FOR SOUTH AFRICA, HE TOLD THE COURT HIS CHURCH SUPPORTED THE POLICY OF SEPARATE DEVELOPMENT FOR DIFFERENT RACES.

THE CHURCH MUST ENCOURAGE, HE SAID, A POLICY WHICH TENDED TO BRING ABOUT JUST AND PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE OF THE PEOPLE OF ALL RACES. IF TENSIONS AND FRICTION WERE ALLOWED TO DEVELOP, THE CHURCH COULD NEVER ESCAPE THE CONSEQUENCES. IT WAS DIFFICULT IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE, HE WENT ON, TO PREACH THE GOSPEL IN A DISORDERLY SOCIETY.
