ONLY 85 OF 104 STARTERS WERE STILL IN THE RALLY AT THE FINISH OF THE 1,300-MILE RUN TO KAMPALA, UGANDA, AND BACK.

LEADING IN THE GENERAL CLASSIFICATION WERE TWO MERCEDES BENZ 220, THE FASTER OF THEM DRIVEN BY LEAD AND CARDWELL OF NAIROBI, FOLLOWED BY A FIAT 2300. FOURTH WAS THE LITTLE SWEDISH SAAB WITH MONTE CARL RALLY WINNER ERIK CARLSSON AT THE WHEEL. CARLSSON WAS STILL WEARING A SLING ON ONE ARM AFTER BEING STONED ON THE OUTWARD TRIP TO KAMPALA BY AFRICAN HOOLIGANS IN KENYA'S MERU DISTRICT.

ANOTHER SAAB - DRIVEN BY BRITAIN'S SUCCESSFUL RALLY COMPETITORS PAT MOSS AND ANN WISDOM WHO ARE IN THE SAFARI FOR THE FIRST TIME WAS IN SIXTH PLACE, BEHIND A 3-LITRE ROVER CARRYING ANOTHER MONTE CARLO WINNER, RONNIE ADAMS, SO FAR BRITAIN'S BEST SAFARI DRIVER.

IN THE TEAM CONTEST, ROVERS WERE SECOND TO MERCEDES. HUMBER SNIPES WERE A CLOSE THIRD, FOLLOWED BY VOLKSWAGENS AND FORD ZODIACS.

ONLY MINUTES SEPARATED THE LEADING CARS, AND THE FINAL OUTCOME WAS STILL WIDE OPEN AS THE REMAINING COMPETITORS LEFT NAIROBI THE SAME NIGHT ON THE SECOND STAGE - SOME 1,600 MILES VIA DAR-ES-SALAAM AND MOMBASA WHICH WILL BRING THE CARS BACK TO NAIROBI FOR THE FINISH ON APRIL 23.
