  • Description

The first group of Iranian volunteers anxious to join the guerrilla fight against Israeli in Southern Lebanon have left Teheran. They flew to Syria where they'll undergo instruction at a Palestinian training camp. The volunteers left despite a warning from Lebanon that they're not wanted.

SYNOPSIS: There were 42-volunteers guerrillas in this first group. Mostly they were men aged between 18 and 25. But there was one 70-year-old man and eight women. They were the advance contingent for some 700 Iranians who've volunteered to join the fight in Southern Lebanon.

As they boarded a commercial flight to the Syrian capital, Damascus, it was still unclear whether they'd ever get to Lebanon. The Lebanese government worried that the Iranians will only increase tension in the region, says they won't be allowed into the country. And the United Nations has warned the presence of Iranian guerrillas could lead to renewed conflict. The volunteers have been recruited by Moslem militant Sheik Mohammed Montazeri who want to see and Iranian force fighting alongside the Palestinian and Lebanese leftists opposing Israel.

The departure of the volunteers took the focus of attention away from the American Embassy in Teheran..if only briefly. It now seems the students will go ahead with their plans to put the hostages on trial. That was the theme of a news conference given by Ayatollah Mohamd Gilani one of Iran's leading judges. He would almost certainly be included on the proposed International Tribunal which would hear the hostages case.
