  • Description

U.S. President Lyndon Johnson was released from Bethesda Naval Hospital Thursday afternoon (21 October) following his gall bladder and kidney stone operation. Wearing a dark business suit and a broad smile, the President strode across the hospital parking lot, waving, shaking hands and looking the picture of health.

Mr. Johnson was accompanied by Mrs. Johnson and by his surgeon Dr. George Hellenbeck. The President said he felt "pretty good". He left the hospital through a door in a hospital wing where he had visited with marines and seamen wounded in the fighting in Vietnam. He walked across the parking lot, shook a few hands, and paused to kiss his nurse. A moment later he stopped and waved to a group of wounded naval personnel. A streamer hanging down from the windows of their hospital ward said "Vietnam O.K.".

A few minutes later the President and Mrs. Johnson were back at the White House. The Chief Executive is expected to spend a few days in the White House and then go to his Texas ranch for four to six weeks of recuperation.
