  • Description

NEARLY A THOUSAND PERSONS - PERHAPS HALF OF THEM AMERICAN INDIANS - CROWDED INTO THE ROTUNDA OF THE STATE CAPITOL BUILDING IN OLYMPIA, WASHINGTON, ON TUESDAY (3 MARCH) TO PRESENT A LIST OF COMPLAINTS TO GOVERNOR ALBERT ROSELLINI. INDIAN SPOKESMEN CLAIMED THE STATE GOVERNMENT IS NOT LIVING UP TO ITS TREATIES WITH THE INDIANS.

THE "POW-WOW" WITH THE GOVERNOR WAS SCHEDULED FOR 11A.M., BUT IT WAS NOON BEFORE THE GOVERNOR APPEARED IN THE ROTUNDA OF THE CAPITOL TO MEET THE INDIANS. WHILE THEY WERE WAITING TEN MAKAH INDIANS ENTERTAINED THE CROWD WITH INDIAN DANCES.

THE STATE'S LARGEST INDIAN TRIBE, THE YAKIMAS, DID NOT PARTICIPATE IN THE PROTEST. THEY SENT A TELEGRAM TO THE GOVERNOR SAYING THAT THEY SUPPORT EXISTING LEGISLATION ON INDIAN AFFAIRS.

INDIAN LEADERS PRESENTED GOVERNOR ROSELLINI WITH A RED, WHITE AND BLUE INDIAN HEADDRESS. THE GOVERNOR TOLD THEM HE WOULD NOT RELAX THE PROHIBITION ON NET FISHING OFF INDIAN RESERVATIONS BUT HE SAID HE WILL SET UP A COMMITTEE TO ADVISE HIM ON INDIAN AFFAIRS.
