    THOUSANDS OF RIOT POLICE WERE MOBILISED YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) TO PREPARE FOR RALLIES BY MORE THAN 200,000 RADICAL STUDENTS AND TRADE UNIONISTS TO MARK "OKINAWA DAY", THE 19TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNITED STATES TAKEOVER OF THE ISLAND UNDER THE SAN FRANCISCO TREATY.

    THE RALLIES WERE CALLED IN PROTEST AT THE TERMS UNDER WHICH OKINAWA IS TO BE RETURNED TO JAPAN NEXT, YEAR, SINCE SOME U.S. BASES (BUT NOT NUCLEAR WEAPONS) WILL BE PERMITTED TO REMAIN.

    AN EXTRA 10,000 RIOT POLICE WERE ON DUTY GUARDING THE DIET, AMERICAN EMBASSY AND OTHER KEY POINTS. LARGEST OF THE CAPITAL'S RALLIES WAS AT THE SHIMIZUDANI PARK, ATTENDED BY THREE EXTREME GROUPS - THE 'RED ARMY', THE 'SMASH THE JAPAN AND UNITED STATES SECURITY TREATY COMMITTEE' AND THE 'COMMUNIST LEAGUE'. BANNER-POLES WERE USED IN MINOR CLASHES.

    ANOTHER GROUP, THE 'REVOLUTIONARY MARXIST', WERE STILL DEMONSTRATING LATE IN THE EVENING AT THE SENDAGAYA PARK. OTHER RALLIES TOOK PLACE IN OTHER PARTS OF THE CITY.
