Background: Tennis -- and at the Wimbledon Championships in London the third round on Thursday (23 June) produced few surprises, but some outstandingly stylish play. It was a nostalgic moment when former women's singles champions Billie Jean King of the United States and Maria Bueno of Brazil faced other on the centre court.

Guillermo Vilas of Argentina, the men's third seed, yielded to fatigue and the tenacious challenge of young American player Billy Martin at Wimbledon on Thursday. Martin won their third-round men's singles match 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 and afterwards Vilas said "that was like a bad dream. I couldn't move I was so tired".

SYNOPSIS: It was the first Wimbledon meeting between he two since Mrs. King beat Miss Bueno 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in 1966 to win the first of her six Wimbledon singles titles. 37 year old Miss Bueno, nearest the camera, was champion three times and has said that she enjoys playing at Wimbledon more than anywhere else in the world.

As the match got underway it was obvious that both ladies were showing something of the form that had once made them champions -- and the crowd loved it. It developed into an intriguing game, but soon fifth seeded Miss King was making most of the running. Afterwards Maria Bueno said that she had felt a little tired and that her service had let her down.

But if speed was lacking style certainly wasn't Mrs. King took the first set 6-2, but at one point during the second set it looked as if Miss Bueno might be getting on top. But she double-faulted several times.

This upset her chances of taking the match and the muscular Billie Jean eventually won 6-2, 7-5. She has played herself back into form recently after an injury and experts are predicting she'll make it to the finals.
