  • Description

Polish President Henryk Jablonski flew into Lagos on Thursday (20 October) to begin a five-day state visit to Nigeria. It was the first visit by a senior Polish official to the country, and the Nigerians laid on an enthusiastic welcome.

There was a big sign welcoming Professor Jablonski when he arrived at Murtala Muhammed Airport, and the Nigerian leader Lieutenant-General Olusegun Obasanjo, and other officials were there to greet him. The two leaders were there to greet him. The two leaders were later to discuss African problems, and scientific and technical co-operation.

It was obvious Nigeria regarded the visit as being important, and so, too, did Poland. The Polish News Agency `Pap' said Nigeria was becoming an `ever more interesting partner' for Poland, and listed crude oil, non-ferrous metals, and palm oil among its `attractive goods'.

Trade between the two countries amounted to 44 million dollars last year and Poland wants to increase its exports of capital good to Nigeria. President Jablonski was to discuss this during his visits to various parts of Nigeria.
