  • Description

A United States motorcycle team has taken the Transatlantic Trophy from Britain after three-round match which is the annual challenge between the two countries. The Americans weren't expected to win this year. But Gene Romero led the U.S. team to victory on Monday (16 April) with some brilliant riding in the series' fifth race at Oulton Park, Cheshire.

SYNOPSIS: As the race started, veteran Gene Romero moved into the lead on his Yamaha. But fellow American, Randy Mamola, quickly moved into second place to challenge his teammate for the lead. By this time the Americans had a big lead but Romero was still forced to battle for first place with both Mamola and Mike Baldwin--another young American.

Baldwin, on a Kawasaki, pushed Romero all the way. Baldwin's second leg time of one minute thirty-seven point-two seconds was the fastest of the day. But Romero won, followed closely by Baldwin with Mamola coming in third.

By the end of that fifth race the Americans led the British by sixty-six points.

British hopes had been pinned on Barry Sheene but gear box trouble forced him to withdraw from the race after six laps.

The trophy has been won by the United States only three times int he past nine years.
