    THE FIRST VIETNAMESE AMBASSADOR TO BE STATIONED IN AUSTRALIA ARRIVED IN SYDNEY LAST THURSDAY (10TH AUGUST). HE IS MR. TRAN VAN LAM, A FORMER GOVERNOR OF SOUTH VIETNAM, AND PRESIDENT OF THE COUNTRY'S FIRST NATIONAL ASSEMBLY. MR. LAM WAS ACCOMPANIED BY HIS THREE CHILDREN, A BOY AND TWO GIRLS. THE NEW AMBASSADOR SAID VIETNAM HAD ESTABLISHED THE EMBASSY TO CREATE CLOSER TIES WITH AUSTRALIA. MOVES FOR THE EMBASSY FIRST BEGAN IN 1957 WHEN MR. LAM VISITED AUSTRALIA WITH A TRADE MISSION. MR. LAM WILL PRESENT HIS CREDENTIALS TO THE GOVERNOR GENERAL, LORD DE L'ISLE, IN CANBERRA NEXT WEEK.
