  • Description

Four Western Australia companies combined recently to make what they claim is the world's biggest beefburger.

The gimmick was conceived by the Australian Meat Board in a bid to boost beef sales. The plan was for the finished product to be at least twice as big as the 4-feet-6-inc diameter burger holding place of honour in the Guiness Book of Records.

The Meat Board called in a team of experts from four Perth companies to do the job.

Apart from the usual bakers to look after the buns and butchers to prepare the meat, engineers were employed to work how they could actually make the giant burger.

The first record came with the baking tin for the buns. 102 square feet (10 square metres) of quarter-inch-steel-plate weighing 1,124 pounds (500 kilograms) was used to manufacture the world's biggest bread tin...9-feet 4-inches in diameter (about 3 metres).

A special brick kiln oven was also constructed to do the baking in.

The bakers had their own problems. One-and-a-half tons (???500 kilograms) of wheat ground down to a ton of flour, went into dough mixing machines and was then baked.

Trial and error provided the bakers with their baking time for a half-ton burger bun, almost 18-inches (45.7 centimetres) thick. The total baking time .. 12 hours .. and another world record achieved.

The butchers boned three steers .. to provide 750 pounds (340 kilograms) of beef which went into the mincers and was then cooked.

For the salad .. 4 crates of lettuces, 4 crates of tomatoes .. two bags of onions .. 112 pounds (50 kilograms) of butter and for the finishing touch 5 gallons (22 litres) of tomato sauce.

The giant burger was completed after 670 man hours and had its moment of glory at the perth Royal Agricultural Show where it led the grand parade.
