    A VISIT TO THE PARR CHONG PHOTO STUDIO OUTSIDE KUALA LUMPUR YESTERDAY (YESTERDAY) BROUGHT BACK MEMORIES TO FIELD MARSHAL SIR GERALD TEMPLER. THE MEMORIES WERE THE DARK DAYS OF THE 12-YEAR MALAYAN EMERGENCY -- FROM 1948 TO 1960. MALAYAN ATTAINED INDEPENDENCE ON AUGUST 31, 1957. SIR GERALD WAS THEN BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER AND DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS AT THE HEIGHT OF THE EMERGENCY FORM 1951 TO 1954.

    SIR GERALD AND MR. PATT CHONG, A CHINESE, ARE OLD FRIENDS. WHEN PATT CHONG LOST HIS SIGHTS FOLLOWING A BOMB EXPLOSION DURING THE EMERGENCY, SIR GERALD HELPED HIM TO ESTABLISH THIS STUDIO. THE STUDIO IS NOW MANAGED BY CHONG'S RELATIVE.

    DURING THE ONE-HOUR VISIT, THEY TALKED ABOUT THE MALAYAN EMERGENCY AND EXCHANGE GIFT SIR GERALD WAS GIVEN PHOTOGRAPHS OF HIS ACTIVITIES IN MALAYA TAKEN BY CHONG, WHO WAS A PHOTOGRAPHER BEFORE THE BOMB EXPLOSION.

    IN 1951, PETALING JAYA, SOME EIGHT MILES FROM KUALA LUMPUR, WAS A SQUATTER AREA. TODAY, IT IS A BUSTLING HOUSING ESTATE AND COMMERCIAL CENTRE. SHE IS MADAME LOW HOE, PATT CHONG'S MOTHER. SHE IS NOW A WIDOW.

    SIR GERALD AND LADY TEMPLER ARRIVED IN KUALA LUMPUR LAST WEEK FOR THE INSTALLATION OF THE FOURTH MALAYSIAN KING, WHICH TOOK PLACE ON MONDAY (APRIL 11).

    THE CENOTAPH ALSO HELPED SIR GERALD RECALL THE MEN, WHO SOME 15 YEARS AGO, HELPED HIM TO BREAK THE BACKBONE OF THE COMMUNIST TERRORISM IN MALAYA.. HE LAID A WREATH AT THE CENOTAPH.

    SIR GERALD WAS ATTRACTED TO THE BRONZE AND MARBLE NATIONAL MONUMENT, BUILT AT A COST OF GBP177-THOUSAND STERLING. IT CONSISTS OF SEVEN BRONZE STATUES, EACH 24 FEET HIGH -- THE BIGGEST BRONZE MONUMENT GROUPING IN THE WORLD. THE TOTAL WEIGHT OF THE GROUP IF 243 TONS.

    THE IDEA OF A NATIONAL MONUMENT WAS FIRST CONCEIVED BY THE MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER, TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN, WHEN HE SAW THE TWO JIMA MONUMENT IN WASHINGTON DURING HIS 1960 VISIT TO THE UNITED STATES.
