  • Description

THE DAUGHTER OF JOSEPH STALIN TODAY (WEDNESDAY) TOLD A NEWS CONFERENCE IN NEW YORK THAT THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE OF THE SOVIET COMMUNIST PARTY SHOULD BEAR SOME OF THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE SEVERE ACTIONS ATTRIBUTED TO HER FATHER WHEN HE RULED THE SOVIET UNION.

MISS STALIN, WHO LEFT THE SOVIET UNION SIX WEEKS AGO AFTER THE DEATH OF HER INDIAN HUSBAND. EXPLAINED SOME OF THE REASONS FOR HER REJECTION OF THE SOVIET WAY OF LIFE AND THE COMMUNIST IDEOLOGY.

THE NEWS CONFERENCE WAS SHOWN TO TELEVISION VIEWERS IN EUROPE VIA A LINK UP WITH THE EARLY BIRD COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITE.

MISS STALIN, NOW AGED 42, SAID ONE OF THE REASONS SHE LEFT THE SOVIET UNION WAS TO PURSUE HER WRITING CAREER, AND HAVE HER WORKS PUBLISHED. THIS, SHE SAID, SHE COULD NOT DO IN THE SOVIET UNION.

SHE SAID THAT SHE HAD BECOME DISILLUSIONED BECAUSE OF THE OFFICIAL REACTION TO HER MARRIAGE TO HER LATE HUSBAND. RAJ KUMAR BRTJESH SINGH A MEMBER OF THE INDIAN COMMUNIST PARTY. SHE SAID THE ATTITUDE OF THE SOVIET GOVERNMENT TO THE MARRIAGE HAD MADE HER ABSOLUTELY INTOLERANT TO THINGS TO WHICH SHE WAS PREVIOUSLY TOLERANT.

IN A BRIEF REFERENCE TO HER FATHER, MISS STALIN ADMITTED THAT THERE WERE THINGS ABOUT HIS ADMINISTRATION OF WHICH SHE DISAPPROVED. SHE SAID, HOWEVER, THAT MANY OTHER MEMBERS OF THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE AND POLITBURO, INCLUDING SOME PRESENT MEMBERS, SHOULD BEAR RESPONSIBILITY AS THE ACTS WERE THE FAULT OF THE PARTY REGIME AS A WHOLE, AND NOT SOLELY THE FAULT OF HER FATHER.

MISS STALIN SAID SHE WISHED TO BE NOW KNOW AS SVETLANA ALLILUYEVA HER MOTHER'S MAIDEN NAME.
