Background: Exhausted crewmen from the wrecked Egyptian freighter "Tayeb" scrambled ashore near Port Louis in Mauritius on Tuesday (8 Feb) after a 12-hour ordeal aboard their stricken vessel.

The ship struck coral reefs near the coast of Mauritius during high seas -- but rescue efforts couldn't start until the waves abated.

The local soldiers using safety belts helped to bring the crew ashore. Four of the sailors died.

SYNOPSIS: Exhausted crewmen from a wrecked Egyptian freighter were helped ashore on the coast of Mauritius on Tuesday after a 12 hour ordeal. Their ship -- the "Tayeb" -- ran onto a coral reef off the coast at the height of a gale. The ship's captain used a rocket to signal for help but mountainous waves prevented rescue parties on shore reaching the stricken ship. When the waves abated, Mauritian troops using life belts helped the crew ashore.

Not all the Egyptian sailors survived the ordeal. Four of them died -- despite first aid efforts on the beach to revive them.

Several of the crew need artificial respiration when they reached the shore -- and all were taken to hospital for a check up. The captain of the "Tayeb" was one who was admitted. So fierce was the storm, that powerful togs in Port Louis harbour were unable to go the aid of the ship.

The injured were near collapse after the hours of waiting on the damaged ship. Their vessel is still hard aground on the reef.
