BUYERS IN LONDON AND NEW YORK WERE ABLE TO BID SIMULTANEOUSLY FOR PRINTS AND PAINTINGS - INCLUDING ONE BY SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL - PUT UP FOR SALE AT SOTHEBY'S IN LONDON.

    THE TRANSMISSION PERMITTED TWO-WAY VIEWING OF THE SALE AND SIMULTANEOUS BIDDING. THE SALE WAS WATCHED BY 800 PEOPLE IN NEW YORK AT THE PARKE-BERNERT GALLERY, WHERE A 50 FOOT SQUARE SCREEN (4.6 METRES SQUARED) SHOWED THE PROGRESS OF THE SALE IN THE LONDON AUCTION ROOM.

    KEENEST RIVALRY WAS SHOWN IN THE BIDDING FOR THE SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL PAINTING 'A VIEW OF MENAGGIO - ON ITALY'S LAKE COMO'. THE AMERICANS QUICKLY TOOK COMMAND AND THE PAINTING WAS EVENTUALLY KNOCKED-DOWN TO MR. JOHN NEWMAN, A TEXAN OIL MILLIONAIRE. A FRIEND ATTENDED THE NEW YORK GALLERY TO BID FOR THE PAINTING.

    THE PRICE WAS 14,000 POUNDS STERLING - A RECORD FOR A CHURCHILL PAINTING. THE PREVIOUS HIGHEST PRICE WAS 9,280 POUNDS STERLING DURING AN AUCTION IN NEW YORK LAST MONTH.

    OTHER ITEMS PUT UP FOR SALE INCLUDED A COLLECTION OF RARE BIRD PRINTS BY THE AMERICAN ORNITHOLOGIST-ARTIST, JOHN AUDUBON, AND A PASTEL BY DEGAS, WHICH WAS SOLD TO A NEW YORK BUYER FOR 20,000 POUND STERLING.
