    IN THE FORTHCOMING ELECTIONS, 11 CANDIDATES ARE CONTESTING FOR THE PRESIDENCY WHILE A TOTAL OF 480 CANDIDATES FOR THE COUNTRY'S FIRST SENATE OF 60 MEMBERS.

    IN SAIGON ON TUESDAY (AUGUST 8), HEAD OF STATE NGUYEN VAN THIEU AND PRIME MINISTER NGUYEN CAO KY, CANDIDATES FROM THE MILITARY FOR PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT ON A JOINT TICKET HELD THEIR FIRST PRESS CONFERENCES IN SAIGON.

    SPEAKING FIRST, GENERAL THIEU READ A STATEMENT OF POLICY IN WHICH THE NEED FOR THE COUNTRY TO BUILD DEMOCRACY, TO END THE WAR AND TO REFORM VIETNAMESE SOCIETY WAS STRESSED.

    ANSWERING A QUESTION, THIEU SAID THAT IF CALLED UPON TO LEAD AN ELECTED GOVERNMENT, HIS ADMINISTRATION WILL, AS THE FIRST PRIORITY, PUT BEFORE HANOI CONDITIONS FOR PEACE.

    ASKED ABOUT HIS WIFE'S VIEWS ON THE MINI-SKIRT, PREMIER KY SAID THAT HE FULLY ENDORSED HER OPINION ON THE BANNING OF MINI-SKIRTS AND EXPLAINED "THERE ARE AT THE PRESENT TIME MORE SERIOUS MATTERS WHICH SHOULD BE BANNED." HOWEVER, HE ADDED HE DID NOT WISH TO SEE HER WEAR MINI-SKIRT BECAUSE IT DOES NOT FIT HER.
