  • Description

Zambia's president Kenneth Kaunda was given a rousing reception at Lusaka airport on Saturday (4 January) on his return from a New Year's holiday in Chinsali, in the country's Northern Province. Mr. Kaunda was met at the airport by a number of top Zambian officials.

Mr. Kaunda's holiday, in his birthplace, was marked by the series of talks he held with visiting British Foreign Secretary James Callaghan and Zambian Foreign Minister Vernon Mwaanga. The three men discussed at length the future of Rhodesia and the developments in South Africa over recent months. The Zambian President played an important role in the Lusaka talks in December, attended for the first time by released members of Rhodesian African nationalist movements.

Mr. Kaunda's return to the capital came the day before the British Foreign Secretary arrived back in Zambia after short visits to Botswana and South Africa. His surprise meeting with South African leader Dr. to continue his six-nation tour of black Africa, Mr. Callaghan issued the Zambian head of state with an official invitation to visit Britain early in 1975.
