  • Description

FINE WEATHER CONTINUED TO TAME THE MONTE CARLO RALLY ROUTES TODAY (SUNDAY) AS CREW HEADED INTO THE THIRD NIGHT OF THE BIG WINTER DRIVING TEST. ONLY 10 OF THE 299 CREWS HAVE SO FAR DROPPED OUT.

MANY DRIVERS REGARD THIS YEAR'S RALLY AS THE EASIEST FOR YEARS. THE CREWS, WHO STARTED FROM NINE DIFFERENT POINTS, ARE DUE TO LINK UP AT RHEIMS TOMORROW. LATER, ON THE RUN SOUTH TO MONTE CARLO, THEY WILL FACE THE TOUGHEST PART OF THE RALLY ROUTE - THE RUGGED STRETCH BETWEEN THE VOSGES AND JURA MOUNTAINS. THEN BETWEEN CHAMBERY AND MONACO THEY COMPETE IN THE ALPS OVER SECTIONS IN WHICH THEY'LL BE TIMED TO THE SECOND. SPEED ALONE COUNTS HERE, AND IF THE MILD WEATHER CONTINUES THE BIG CARS WILL HAVE A DISTINCT ADVANTAGE.

FILMED ARE 124 RALLY CREWS PASSING THROUGH THE CONTROL POINT IN THE HAGUE TONIGHT. THEY STARTED FROM OSLO, MINSK, AND WARSAW, AND INCLUDED DRIVERS FROM WEST GERMANY, HOLLAND, SWITZERLAND, AUSTRIA, BRITAIN, POLAND AND RUSSIA. THE SOVIET AMBASSADOR AT THE HAGUE WAS ON HAND TO WELCOME THE RUSSIAN CREWS.
