  • Description

WEST GERMANY'S RULING CHRISTIAN DEMOCRAT PARTY TODAY (THURSDAY) CHOSE DR. KURT-GEORG KEISINGER, PREMIER OF BADEN-WURTTEMBERG, AS THEIR CANDIDATE TO SUCCEED CHANCELLOR LUDWIG ERHARD, AND ENTRUSTED HIM WITH THE DIFFICULT TASK OF RESTORING THEIR GOVERNMENT MAJORITY.

DR. KEISINGER EMERGED AS A LAST-MINUTE CHOICE FROM THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS AFTER SEVERAL OTHER POTENTIAL CANDIDATES HAD BEEN STRONGLY TIPPED. HE FINALLY DEFEATED THREE MAIN RIVALS FOREIGN MINISTER GERHARD SCHROEDER; PARTY FLOOR LEADER RAINER BARZEL, AND COMMON MARKET COMMISSION PRESIDENT, PROFESSOR WALTER HALLSTEIN, WHO WAS PROPOSED AT THE LAST MINUTE.

HERR FRANZ JOSEF STRAUSS, POWERFUL LEADER OF THE BAVARIAN WING OF THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS, THREW HIS WEIGHT BEHIND THE CATHOLIC STATE PREMIER AND SO DID DR. EUGEN GERSTENMAIER, PRESIDENT (SPEAKER) OF THE BUNDESTAG, WHO WITHDREW HIS WON CANDIDACY LAST NIGHT (WEDNESDAY). DR. KEISINGER'S FINAL MAJORITY IN THE PARLIAMENTARY GROUP VOTE WAS CONVINCING.

THE SILVERY-HAIRED LAWYER'S PAST ASSOCIATION WITH THE NAZI PARTY COULD PROVE AN OBSTACLE TO HIS WINNING THE NECESSARY SUPPORT FROM EITHER THE SOCIAL DEMOCRATS OR THE FREE DEMOCRATS, THE TWO OPPOSITION PARTIES. DR. KEISINGER RECENTLY DENIED THAT HE HAD ANY ASSOCIATION WITH THE NAZIS OTHER THAN JOINING THE PARTY IN 1933 AND WITHDRAWING HIS SUPPORT AFTER ONE YEAR. DURING THE LAST WAR HE SAID HE WORKED MERELY AS A TECHNICAL ASSISTANT IN THE FOREIGN OFFICE.

AT A HASTILY ARRANGED PRESS CONFERENCE TODAY DR. KEISINGER SAID HE WOULD WORK FOR THE SWIFTEST POSSIBLE RE-UNIFICATION OF EUROPE. HE SAID HE WOULD ALSO STRIVE FOR CLOSER LINKS WITH EASTERN EUROPE AND FOR BRITISH MEMBERSHIP OF THE EUROPEAN COMMON MARKET. HIS MAIN OBJECT, HE ASSERTED, WAS TO FORM A COALITION GOVERNMENT "WITH A REALLY SOLID BASIS".
