Background: MALAYSIAN SECURITY FORCES IN SARAWAK ARE COLLECTING FIREARMS AND AMMUNITION FROM NON-NATIVES, WHO ARE MAINLY CHINESE. THIS MOVE RESULTED FROM REPORTS THAT THE COMMUNIST CLANDESTINE ORGANISATION WAS PLANNING AN ARMED UPRISING AGAINST THE SARAWAK GOVERNMENT; AND THE INCREASE OF COMMUNIST CADRES IN THE COUNTRY.

IN SIBU, WHERE COMMUNIST INFLUENCE IS STRONG, SECURITY FORCES HAVE COLLECTED ABOUT 400 FIREARMS - MOSTLY SHOTGUNS FOR HUNTING - AND A LARGE QUANTITY OF AMMUNITION. ABOUT 130 MORE SHOTGUNS HAVE STILL TO BE COLLECTED.

THE RESPONSE OF THE CHINESE TO APPEALS TO SURRENDER THEIR FIREARMS HAS BEEN VERY GOOD. THOSE WHO FAIL TO TURN IN THEIR WEAPONS ARE LIABLE TO ARREST AND HEAVY PENALTIES.

WHILE FIREARMS ARE BEING COLLECTED, PLANS OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE, ARE AIR DROPPING SUPPLIES TO BRITISH AND MALAYSIAN DEFENCE POSITIONS ALONG THE 900-MILE FRONTIER WHICH SEPARATES MALAYSIAN SARAWAK FROM INDONESIAN BORNEO. THE TROOPS IN THESE POSITIONS ARE ON THE SHARP LOCKOUT FOR INDONESIAN INCURSION INTO MALAYSIAN TERRITORY.

THE FRESH SUPPLIES CONSIST OF FOOD FOR THE TROOPS AND FUEL FOR HELICOPTERS SHUTTLING TROOPS BACK AND FORTH TO THE OUTPOSTS.

MEANWHILE, GURKHA TROOPS PATROL THE MANY RIVERS AGAINST INDONESIAN INFILTRATORS. THESE RIVERS PROVIDE ACCESS ROUTES FOR INDONESIAN TROOPS INTO MALAYSIAN TERRITORY. THE BOATS USED BY THE GURKHAS ARE POWERED BY OUTBOARD MOTORS. EACH BOAT HAS AN ??? GUIDE WHO KNOWS THE AREA WELL. HE IS ALSO AN EXPERT IN FOOTPRINTS.
