  • Description

IN ONE OF HIS GREATEST DISPLAYS, ARNOLD PALMER TOOK THE LEAD AT THE END OF THE FIRST ROUND OF THE AMERICAN OPEN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) AT THE WASHINGTON CONGRESSIONAL CLUB COURSE WITH A MAGNIFICENT, TWO UNDER PAR, 68.

THIS GAVE HIM A TWO-STROKE LEAD OVER W. COLLINS, WHO HAD A 70. TONY LEMA, ONE OF THE JOINT FAVOURITES WITH PALMER AND NICKLAUS, HAD A 71 WITH TWO OTHERS, AND NICKLAUS AND CHARLES - THE RECENT WINNER OF THE BRITISH OPEN - HAD A 72.

PALMER'S 68 CONSTITUTES A RECORD FOR THE COURSE WHICH HAS NEVER BEEN PLAYED IN ITS PRESENT FORM BEFORE, OVER 7,000 YARDS (6,400 METRES) LONG.

OUR CAMERAMAN FILMED SOME OF THE WORLD'S BEST GOLFERS TEEING OFF. SAMMY SNEAD, 52 YEAR-OLD VETERAN, RETURNED A 77 FOR THE FIRST ROUND. TONY LEMA WAS IN WITH A 71 - HE HAS WON HIS LAST TWO TOURNAMENTS AGAINST WORLD CLASS GOLFERS. BOBBY NICHOLS RETURNED A GOOD 72. LEFT-HANDED NEW ZEALANDER BOB CHARLES HAD A 72 AND SO DID JACK NICKLAUS - A FORMER WINNER OF THE OPEN. BRUCE CRAMPTON WAS ALSO ON THE 72 MARK. KEL NAGLE, THE AUSTRALIAN, WAS NOT AMONG THE LEADERS, AND GARY PLAYER OF SOUTH AFRICA, WITH A 75, CAME BACK 7 STROKES BEHIND PALMER. JULIUS BOROS, THE DEFENDING CHAMPION, WAS ANOTHER PLAYER WHO WAS NOT WELL PLACED.
