Background: INTRODUCTION: Volleyball...and the Soviet Union beat the Cuban men's volleyball team, in a keenly-fought match in the World Cup championships in Tokyo, Japan, on Thursday (26 November). Both teams were strongly backed to win, going into the match undefeated in the championship. The Soviet Union went on to win.Cuba and Brazil shared joint second place.

SYNOPSIS: The Cubans, in red, showed the strength and style which had carried them through their matches to meet the Soviets. However, the Soviet domination was obvious in the first game which they won 15-3.It was really only in the second game that Cuba looked like it had any real chance of success.Only two points separated the teams at the end of the game, which went to the Soviet 17-15.

The Cubans fought bravely in the final game but the height and reach of the opposition at the net, traditionally a strength of the Soviet team, proved too daunting. As the only undefeated teams in the championship both Cuba and the Soviet Union had every reason to be confident of success. But it was the Soviet's skilful blocking and positioning which won them points and thwarted many Cuban moves.

The Soviets were not to be deprived of the victory which has been theirs in other men's volleyball World Cup championships. In their final game, the Soviets defeated Italy with ease, taking the match 15-6, 15-5, 15-9.The Soviets won the round-robin championship unbeaten, with 12 points.Cuba and Brazil were second with 11 points.
