  • Description

AN ATHENS COURT MARTIAL TODAY PASSED A ONE YEAR PRISON SENTENCE -- SUSPENDED FOR THREE YEARS -- ON A 72-YEAR-OLD RETIRED ARMY GENERAL, ARCHEMIDES ARGYROPOULOS ON A CHARGE OF TREASON. THE TRIAL OPENED YESTERDAY.

GENERAL ARGYROPOULOS, GREEK REPRESENTATIVES WITH THE NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANISATION (NATO) IN 1952, WAS CHARGED WITH PREPARING TO OVERTHROW THE REGIME AND ALTER FUNDAMENTAL CONSTITUTIONAL PROVISIONS.

HE WAS ARRESTED LAST JUNE WHEN SECURITY OFFICIALS SEIZED PLAN DRAWN UP BY THE GENERAL WHICH, SAID THE INDICTMENT, PROPOSED ACTION INCLUDING THE USE OF ARMS IN ELECTIONS FOR A PARLIAMENT WHICH WERE TO HAVE BEEN HELD IN MAY -- A FEW WEEKS AFTER THE ARMY TAKEOVER.

THE CROWN PROSECUTOR, MR. IONNIS LIAPIS, WHO DEMANDED THREE YEARS IMPRISONMENT FOR THE GENERAL, CLAIMED THE PLAN PROPOSED ACTION TO INFLUENCE THE RESULT OF THE ELECTION -- WHICH DID NOT TAKE PLACE BECAUSE OF THE ARMY COUP -- AND IF APPLIED WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN BLOODSHED.

PLEADING BEFORE THE FIVE-MEMBER MILITARY COURT, GENERAL ARGYROPOULOS ADMITTED DRAFTING THE PLAN AND SAID IT WAS DRAWN UP FOR THE LATE GEORGE PAPANDREOU, FORMER PREMIER AND LEADER OF THE UNION OF THE CENTRE PARTY.
