The aloof royalty in Japan grants but rare audience to the people. The New Year?
The aloof royalty in Japan grants but rare audience to the people. The New Year is one such occasion and 200,000 people thronged the imperial Palace grounds in Tokyo on Jan 2 to see the Imperial Majesties, the Crown Prince and the Princess.
Many foreigners took the opportunity of gaining entry to the Imperial Palace, the doors of which open for the man-in-the-street only on such occasions.
This post-war democratisation of the Japanese royalty -- prior to that the people looked upon the Emperor as the God's representatives -- has caught up with the Japanese people who turn up in their thousands on these rare occasions to see the Royal Family.
Emperor Hirohito, Empress Nagako, Crown Prince Akihito and Princess Michiko appeared on the balcony and acknowledged the greetings of the people.
