  • Description

Singapore's Rime Minister Lee Kuan Yew was ensured another five years in office on Saturday (2 September) when his People's Action Party won all 65 parliamentary seats--and 70 per cent of all votes.
Early on Sunday (3 September) when the counting was finally completed, Lee described the victory as a massive show of confidence by the electorate in the P.A.P. government, which has ruled Singapore since 1959.
Although an overwhelming victory for the PAP had never been in doubt, the five opposing parties had hoped at least to gain a taken seat or two to present a further one-party parliamentary term.
More than 90 per cent of the 812,000 eligible voters turned out for the Saturday poll.
