  • Description

Leaders of Chile's 26-day-old employers' strike against President Allende's government on sunday (5 November) ordered their supporters to return to work on Monday.

The back-to-work call came after the strike leaders had received an ultimatum from the Marxist Government to call off the strike, or face what was called "severs action."
The strike has crippled the country's economy.

The welcome news comes soon after a major shake-up in the chilean Cabinet in which the former Army Commander, General Carlos Prats, was appointed Minister of the Interior.

Almost immediately after his appointment, General Prats promised to end the strike within 48 hours.

SYNOPSIS: In the Chilean capital of Santiago, the newly-appointed Minister of the Interior, and former Army Commander, general Carlos Prats, lost on time in seeking a solution to the crippling employers' strike which has plagued the country. Among the first to be invited to the new Minister's office were leaders of the para-military chilean police.

General Prats had promised to end the twenty-six-day strike within forty-eight hours of taking office. He appears to have succeeded - on sunday, strike leaders ordered their supporters to return the following day. They had been threatened with "severe action" unless they called off their strike.

President Allende, despite his country's problems, has been celebrating two years in office. In a nation-wide broadcast he admitted short-comings in his Government. He said: "We know we have committed some mistakes, and more than some....but we want to stop committing them." Celebrations to mark the Government's first two years, due to be held at the weekend, had been postponed until Monday (6 November) because of the strike crisis.
