Background: The Paris Air Show opened officially on May 27 with the American space shuttle enterprise as the star of this year's event. Enterprise was flown in to Le Bourget Airport on the back of a Boeing 747 to take its place in the show. But French newspapers devoted most of their attention to the recession in the aerospace industry. They pointed out that civil aviation is in a crisis, with the market for aircraft continuing to decline. Some new military equipment was on show, including a French laser-guided missile, the AS30, made by Aerospatiale. The only American fighter plane at Le Bourget was the F20 Tigershark, but there were military helicopters from the U.S. on display, and a number of French Mirage fighters. Among the contributions from Britain was the Sea Harrier, which served in the Falklands war last year.
