  • Description

Thousands of people turned out at the quayside of Tyre, the ancient Lebanese port, on Saturday (July 29) to cheer Canadian Dietrich Dombro and his family on their way as they set sail in a 30-foot (nine-metre) boat on a two-year Odyssey to North America.

The aim of 46-year-old Mr. Dombro is to prove a theory based on the legend that the Phoenicians, pre-Christian ancestors of the present-day Lebanese, sailed to America by the Indian and Pacific Oceans long before Christopher Columbus discovered the New World in 1492.

Accompanying Mr. Dombro in 'Phoenicia'--his vessel based on ships of Phoenician times--is his wife Isabelle, 43, and their two sons, Dexter, 16, and sight-year-old Lawrence.

The Dombros sailed 51 miles (81 kms) to Beirut in 17 hours, form whence their boat is to be taken overland to the historic Biblical port of Aqaba in Jordan for the start of the main journey to America.

president Sulieman Franjieh of Lebanon, whose country is helping sponsor the voyage of rediscovery, has promised the Canadian family a heros' welcome if they complete the two-year return voyage successfully.
