  • Description

Despite a parliamentary motion aimed to impeach her, Argentine President Maria Estela Peron officiated at a special ceremony held for the promotion of officers in the Argentine army on tuesday (30 December).

The motion to impeach President Peron was delayed by procedural wrangling in the Argentina parliament....and a power cut which blacked out the Congress building.

The impeachment motion was tabled by 12 members of the centre right party, the Popular Federal Force.

The motion accused President Peron's administration of incompetence and corruption.

The President's supporters in parliament lack an overall majority in the Lower House but could deprive the opposition forces of the necessary two thirds majority required to approve an impeachment request.

However, despite such pressure, President Peron attended the military ceremony in Buenos Aires and presented promotion medals and certificates to members of the Argentinean armed forces.

In apparent response to demands from Army commander, General Jorge Videla, to "put an end to immorality and corruption within the government" President Peron has ordered the current social Welfare Minister to cooperate with a parliamentary commission investigating corruption.

The former social Welfare Minister in President Peron's government, Senor Jose Lopez Rega, failed to appear before a Federal Judge probing criminal aspects of the corruption scandal surrounding the Peronist Administration.

The Judge requested the aid of the International Police Organisation, Interpol, in an effort to trace the former Minister.

The daughter of Senor Lopez Rega, who is indicted on two charges concerning the misuse of public funds, presented the judge with a certificate, signed by a Spanish doctor inn Madrid, saying that Senor Lopez Rega's has a diabetic condition which prevents him from travelling to Buenos Aires.

SYNOPSIS: Buenos Aires, the scene of a special armed forces promotion ceremony at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday.

One of the first to arrive at the Palace was the President of the Argentine Senate, Dr. Italo Luder.

Another who attended the ceremony was the Army Commander, General Jorge Videla. General Videla has been leading a pressure group within the armed forces, who have called upon President Peron to put an end to "immorality and corruption" within her administration.

A Parliamentary motion aimed at the impeachment of President Peron has already been put forward in the Lower House. However, despite this, Senora Peron presided at the ceremony. The motion accused the Peron Administration of "incompetence and corruption". Although President Peron's supporters in the Parliament lack an overall majority in the Lower House they may be able to deprive the opposition of the necessary two thirds majority required to approve an impeachment request. The debate on the impeachment motion was delayed by procedural wrangles... and a sudden power cut which blacked out the Congress Building. In apparent response to demands from General Videla, President Peron has ordered leading government officials to cooperate with a parliamentary commission investigating corruption.
