With units of the Italian army leading the way, thousands of partisan veterans and sympathizers, march to Rome's Piazza Venezia, site of Italy's monument to the unknown soldier Premier Zoli reads a message from President Gronchi when suddenly, agitators in the crowd disrupt proceedings by giving the forbidden Fascist Salute. The leader of the Fascist party is pushed down a flight of steps, knocked to the ground and given a bloody nose. Meanwhile police struggled to protect a young boy from the angry crowd. The boy had been assigned by the Fascists to rip a medal from a partisan veterans's shirt. The police were hard pressed to save him, finally rushing him into a car and driving away, under a storm of verbal abuse.
